Which image model should establish an artist’s visual identity?
Audition image models on a portrait, environment, and cover composition before choosing one for a recurring artist identity.

The short answer
Choose an image model by how well it holds the approved artist identity across several useful frames. One impressive portrait is not enough. Test a portrait, a scene, and a cover-like composition using the same identity brief; compare continuity, editability, and cost before making it the default.
Define what must stay recognizable
List the traits the audience should recognize: silhouette, face or mask, recurring garment, materials, palette, and the relationship between the person and the world. Separate those from variables such as location, lighting, and camera distance. If every image repeats the same pose and backdrop, the campaign feels cloned. If every image changes the core traits, it no longer feels like one artist.
Studio currently offers several image routes, including direct providers and models through Vercel AI Gateway. The model menu shows available quality tiers and costs. Those labels describe technical options, not artistic fit. A highly detailed image can still be wrong when the figure lacks the artist’s character or leaves no usable crop for artwork.
Run a three-frame audition
Frame one is a close artist image: can a viewer identify the character? Frame two is a wider environment: does the visual world persist without becoming generic scenery? Frame three is a cover candidate: is there useful negative space for title and platform crops? Give each output a pass, revise, or reject decision with one sentence explaining why.
Keep your best approved reference outside a single model prompt. A short written identity sheet plus selected images survives a vendor change. If you move to another model, it gives you a stable target rather than asking the new system to invent the artist again.
Keep the image connected to the song
The final test is whether the image helps a listener remember the recording. Ask what part of the track the frame makes visible: an emotional shift, a lyric image, a place, or a performance gesture. Attractive imagery without that connection is decoration.
