Spotify Canvas vs Countdown video vs full-length video
A current guide to the job, timing, shape, and eligibility of Spotify’s three artist-video surfaces.

The short answer
Spotify Canvas is a 3–8 second vertical loop shown in Now Playing. Countdown video supports the pre-release story around an upcoming album’s Countdown Page. Full-length video is a song-linked format currently rolling out through Spotify for Artists in beta. They serve different campaign moments, dimensions, and levels of narrative depth.
The formats are not interchangeable
Canvas, Countdown video, and full-length video can share an art direction, but they meet the listener at different moments. Canvas lives beside an individual track during listening. Countdown content helps create anticipation before an eligible album release. Full-length video gives the song a sustained viewing experience.
Choose the destination before producing the file. A beautiful eight-second loop is not a substitute for a video master, and a widescreen narrative rarely becomes a strong vertical loop merely by cropping it.
Canvas: one complete visual behavior
Spotify defines Canvas as a 3–8 second vertical 9:16 loop that replaces the album artwork in Now Playing. Its current guidelines specify 720–1080 pixels in height and MP4 or JPG input.
The short duration favors one complete visual behavior. Spotify recommends avoiding rapid cuts and intense flashing, designing for phone edges that may crop, and considering the removal of artist and song names because that information already appears in the player.
- Best job: deepen the atmosphere while the listener is already playing the track.
- Best source idea: a seamless continuous loop, deliberate hard cut, or reversible movement.
- Common failure: trimming a longer scene so it ends before the visual idea resolves.
Countdown video: build context before release
Spotify Countdown Pages are pre-release destinations for eligible upcoming albums. They can bring together pre-saves, tracklist previews, countdown videos, and merch, and Spotify surfaces them across areas including artist profiles, Search, Home, and its Upcoming Releases hub.
A countdown video should create a reason to anticipate rather than summarize the full campaign. Use it for a world-building detail, a behind-the-scenes decision, an unreleased lyric, or a concise statement of what is changing with the project.
- Best job: turn awareness into anticipation and pre-release intent.
- Best source idea: a reveal, process fragment, or meaningful piece of release context.
- Common failure: treating every countdown asset as the same pre-save advertisement.
Full-length video: give the song a viewing experience
Spotify’s 2026 direct-upload beta accepts live performances, studio or acoustic sessions, covers, and official music videos. Spotify recommends 16:9 landscape. It currently excludes lyric videos, visualizers, multi-song concerts, and videos without music from this upload flow.
Spotify is rolling access out gradually. Artists in the beta can find the upload option in Video & Visuals on desktop. Existing label or distributor delivery remains available, and an artist should verify current access and requirements before commissioning a master.
- Best job: create a sustained song-linked experience after or around release.
- Best source idea: a performance, session, cover, or fully structured official video.
- Common failure: assuming a visualizer or lyric video is eligible because it contains the full song.
Build the system while the surfaces are still evolving
Spotify’s visual ecosystem is moving from one small loop toward a broader release surface. Artists who build the visual grammar now have more time to learn how their work translates before every format becomes another last-minute deliverable. The advantage is readiness and iteration—not promised reach.
Keep one motif, palette, type behavior, image treatment, and motion principle in Artifex Studio. Express it as a complete loop, a piece of anticipation, artwork, and a developed video direction. When a new surface becomes available, you are adapting an identity people can recognize instead of inventing one under deadline.
