Read the credit estimate before you render
Understand model clip lengths, credit estimates, and the difference between a cheap generation and an approved release asset.

The short answer
Treat the estimate as a decision aid: identify the selected model, its supported clip lengths, the number of clips, and the final assembly cost before pressing Generate. Studio prices video on the length a model actually produces. A five-second request to a model that only makes four-, six-, or eight-second clips is billed as six seconds.
Work through one example
At the prices encoded in Studio on 4 October, Veo 3.1 Lite costs approximately $0.03 per generated second. A requested five-second shot rounds to a six-second output, giving a provider-cost basis of $0.18, or 18 Studio credits at one credit per cent. A five-second Runway Gen-4.5 shot is listed at $0.05 per second, or 25 credits. These are clip examples, not full campaign estimates; renders, images, text, retries, and other work can add to the total. Recheck the displayed estimate when you generate because pricing changes.
The three levers you control
First, reduce unapproved generation. Write the shot’s job: “introduce the artist,” “reveal the lyric,” or “transition into the chorus.” A shot with no job is easy to regenerate endlessly. Second, choose the minimum length that still covers the edit; be aware of the model’s length increments. Third, test a representative source image before committing to many clips. If the character drifts in one shot, a larger batch usually compounds the problem.
For text, the menu’s per-call number is a typical estimate, not a fixed tariff. Long artist context and long responses use more tokens. The Billing view can show where credits went by model, which turns the estimate into a feedback loop.
Use the estimate to set a stop rule
The useful budget question is not “Which model has the lowest price?” It is “What will one approved, editable asset cost after realistic retries?”

Questions, answered.
- Why can a five-second request cost six seconds?
- Some models support fixed clip lengths. Studio rounds up to the shortest supported output that covers the requested length.
- Is a text model’s per-call hint a fixed charge?
- No. Text is metered by actual token use, so the menu figure is an estimate.
