Spotify cover art rules for AI artwork: a release preflight
Spotify's current cover-art specifications, rights checks, AI Persona note, and a practical preflight for AI-made release artwork.

The short answer
Spotify publishes one cover-art specification rather than a separate AI-image file standard: deliver a square, high-resolution file in an accepted format and do not upscale it. Its content-provider guideline also rules out QR codes and unfinished placeholder covers. AI-made artwork needs two additional reviews: confirm that you can use every depicted element, and check whether a photorealistic invented person is functioning as the artist's identity.
Use Spotify's cover specification, not the generator's default
Spotify Support says cover art can be TIFF, PNG, or JPG. It specifies a width and height between 640 and 10,000 pixels, a 1:1 aspect ratio, and sRGB at 24 bits per pixel. Spotify also says not to upscale the image and does not support embedded color profiles or orientation metadata. A generator's download button does not verify any of those conditions.
Artifex analysis: use the generated image as source material, then make a deliberate delivery master. Crop to a true square, render at a native size inside Spotify's range, convert the pixels to sRGB, flatten orientation, and inspect the exported file rather than the preview. PNG is a conservative choice when you want to avoid another lossy save. Do not enlarge a small result just to reach a preferred distributor size; generate or render again at sufficient resolution.
Spotify's Service Level Guideline for music content providers, dated 30 April 2024, says a delivery may not take effect as expected when the artwork contains a QR code. It also says the delivered product must be complete and final rather than an unfinished cover intended for replacement around release day. Use the approved cover, not a placeholder.
AI changes the rights review, not the pixel checklist
Spotify's current cover-art page does not publish a separate technical file standard for AI-made images. That absence is not a rights clearance. Spotify's Intellectual Property Policy says material that infringes another party's copyright or trademark may be removed. AI output should therefore be checked for copied-looking artwork, protected characters, brand marks, packaging, and other elements you cannot document a right to use.
Keep the model, prompt, source images, edit history, license terms, and final approval with the exported cover. If a real person's likeness appears, confirm consent before delivery. These are production and record-keeping recommendations, not legal advice; ask qualified counsel about a specific rights question.
Photorealistic invented artists have a separate identity question
Spotify defines an AI Persona around an artist identity presented as a photorealistic AI-generated human. Its support page says album artwork can be among the visual elements that represent that identity. This is different from using an image tool to make an abstract cover, a landscape, or artwork for a real artist.
Artifex analysis: review the whole profile, not the cover in isolation. If the same invented photorealistic person appears as the artist across the name, profile imagery, headers, and album covers, read Spotify's current AI Persona guidance before release. Do not describe a fictional image as documentary photography or imply that a real person participated when that is not true.
Run one preflight before the distributor receives the file
Separate platform acceptance from creative quality. A technically valid cover can still become unreadable at thumbnail size, and a striking cover can still fail delivery checks. The thumbnail test below is Artifex analysis, not a Spotify acceptance rule.
- File: accepted image format, true square, native resolution within Spotify's published range, sRGB, no orientation dependency, and no QR code.
- Rights: no unlicensed artwork, trademark, character, logo, or real-person likeness.
- Identity: decide whether a photorealistic invented person is being presented as the artist, then review the AI Persona guidance.
- Readability: inspect the cover at full size and as a small square; remove accidental generator marks, broken type, and edge artifacts.
- Record: save the source references, prompt, model, settings, edits, approval, and final checksum beside the release.
Fix rejected or incorrect artwork through the delivery chain
Spotify Support tells artists to contact their label or distributor to fix artwork, and says that party must send the corrected metadata update. Prepare a clean replacement master and identify the exact release before opening the request. Do not assume an edit in Spotify for Artists can replace delivered cover art directly.
Ask the distributor which check failed: file specification, its own store-wide rules, metadata consistency, or rights review. That distinction determines whether to re-export the same concept or replace the image itself. Distributor requirements can be stricter than Spotify's public page, so run both checklists before resubmitting.

Go deeper before the next release decision.
One square file can hold the release
Build the cover, then preflight it before delivery.
Bring one finished track into Studio, create a focused square artwork direction, inspect the approved image for rights and identity risks, and export the asset you choose for your distributor.
Create cover artworkFrequently asked
Questions, answered.
- Does Spotify ban AI-generated cover art?
- Spotify's current cover-art requirements page does not state a blanket ban on AI-generated artwork. The image still has to meet the technical specification and Spotify's rights rules. Photorealistic invented artist identities also need review under the separate AI Persona guidance.
- Can I change rejected Spotify cover art inside Spotify for Artists?
- Spotify says artwork corrections must go through your label or distributor, which sends the metadata update. Ask the distributor for the rejection reason before exporting a replacement.
- Is a 3000 by 3000 pixel cover mandatory for Spotify?
- Spotify's own support page currently states a range of 640 to 10,000 pixels in both width and height, with a 1:1 aspect ratio. Your distributor may set a narrower requirement, so check its delivery specification too.
