Keep a provenance record for every AI release asset
Why musicians should preserve model, prompt, settings, cost, and source relationships for generated artwork, clips, and release media.

The short answer
A provenance record answers three questions: how an asset was made, what it was made from, and whether it can be explained later. For AI release assets, that means model, prompt, settings, cost, source images or clips, references, and final approval. It supports disclosure, repeatability, and dispute response.
Why provenance matters
Disclosure rules and platform labels are becoming more specific. YouTube asks creators to disclose certain altered or synthetic content, and the EU AI Act Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. If a question arrives after upload, memory is a weak archive.
A record also improves creative repeatability. If an image becomes the release identity, you need to know the model, settings, references, and prompt that created it. Otherwise the next asset starts from a screenshot and a guess.
What to store
Store model, quality, price or credits, prompt, generation settings, source image, composed clips, reference assets, approval notes, and what changed after generation. For a realistic person or voice-like element, also store consent and rights notes outside the creative prompt.
What Studio records
New Studio image and video assets record the model, quality, cost, prompt, generation settings, and what each asset was made from. Older assets made before 13 October 2026 have model and cost only. MCP clients can inspect an asset with `get_asset_provenance`.
Do not confuse provenance with permission
A record explains the process. It does not grant rights to a likeness, composition, recording, or brand mark. Treat provenance as the map you review before disclosure or rights decisions, not as a legal shield.
Connect the work
Go deeper before the next release decision.
Memory is not a release archive
Keep the making-of record attached to the asset.
Generate images and videos in Studio so prompts, models, settings, costs, and source relationships stay with the library item before you export.
Create with provenanceFrequently asked
Questions, answered.
- Does provenance replace platform disclosure?
- No. It gives you the facts needed to make a disclosure decision, but each platform rule still has to be reviewed.
- Can Studio show how an asset was made?
- For new image and video assets, yes. Studio records prompts, settings, model, cost, and source relationships; older assets have less complete metadata.
